Bormes-les-Mimosas

Bouramo is its old, Provençal name. This name originates from the Celtic "Borma" and may mean "sparkling water".
Located in a very dry area Bormes was already formerly known for its numerous sources. Even today spring water is bubbling out of 12 wells in the village.

Bormes was originally founded as barrage village in the 12th century. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in Europe. Bormes-les-Mimosas has held the "4 flowers" label, the highest distinction which recognises the towns and villages in flower, and has been chosen by the high jury in 1988, 1991 and 1994.

At the circus main road (RN 98) direction Hyères after 500 m you have to turn right. In the district "Le Pin" at the crossways (looking like the letter "T") you have to turn right into direction "Centre". You have to follow this serpentine road approximately 3 km up to the Old Town. There you have to turn left, then leave your car on the right side at the parking place in front of the castle. In contrast to the signposted free parking places this parking place is free of charge even during the peak season.

Starting there you can follow the path with the Way of the Cross stations up to the crest respectively chapel enjoying an unique view or you go back to the village following the loop road and with this passing the alleys and arches of Bormes.

The Romanic Chapelle St. François, built in 1560 as well as Eglise St. Trophyme, just built in the 19th Century are both worth seeing. Eglise St. Trophyme will fascinate you with its beautiful frescos completed in 1999. Sometimes there are also concerts.

Above all you see the castle "Le Château des Seigneurs de Bormes", built in the 13th to 14th Century. Unfortunately this castle cannot be visited as it is privately owned. But you can visit the museum "Arts et Histoire de Bormes", built in 1926 and founded by the native painter Benezit.

From April to September a guided tour is offered once a week. If you are interested a botanical guided tour will sometimes be organized as well.
